Apprenticeship

Iron Workers Local 263 Apprenticeship and Training office is located in the same building as the Local in Arlington, Texas  We also have training classes in Amarillo, Texas and El Paso, Texas. Their phone number is 817.640.1960 and their fax is 817.649.4158.  The Training Coordinator is Julio Gonzalez and the Office Secretary is Kelli Yeats.

The JATC (Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee) is comprised of 6 members, 3 from labor and 3 from management.  The Chairman and Secretary are alternated between labor and management from year to year.  Applications are accepted Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  It is a three year training program.

Requirements are as follows:  you must have a Drivers License, Social Security Card and reliable transportation.  Apprentices must attend classes two nights per week three hours per night and work on the jobsites in the day time.  The school year runs from September thru May and the hours are from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  The year is divided into two semesters - 102 hours per semester, if semester hours are completed apprentices receive a 5% pay increase each semester until completion. No completion of semester hours no pay increases.

Apprentice curriculum is as follows:  Introduction to Ironworking, 10 Hour OSHA, Subpart –R training, Scaffolding Erection and Dismantlement, Forklift safety training, First Aid and CPR Training, Structural Steel Erection, Architectural and Ornamental erection, Rigging and Cranes, Blueprint Reading, Welding, Foreman Training, History of the Ironworkers, Precast Concrete Erection and Safety, Pre-Engineered Metal Building Erection, Mathematics for Iron Workers and Reinforcing placement.  Journeyman upgrading classes are scheduled on an as needed basis for Safety and Welding.

The Instructors in Arlington are Carter Gillespie, Joel Jordan, James Landry, L.C. Marlin, J. W. Sneed, Michael Salceda, and Juan Trevino.  The Instructor for Amarillo is Christopher Wheeler and the El Paso instructor is Reymundo Ontiveros.
